So You Want To Go To Music School - Picking a Major
So you’ve decided to go to music school. Now what? It’s time to decide on your major. I’ve listed out some (not all, cause let’s be serious, there are SO many different directions you can go in music) of the possible majors you can choose:
Music Education: This is fairly self explanatory, but just in case…Music educators can teach band, choir, orchestra, general music, music technology, private lessons, marching band, heck, I taught Color Guard for a few years! As a music ed major, you get to explore everything music wise. You’ll learn how to teach every instrument and how to advocate for arts education.
Music Therapy: Music therapy mixes psychology and music together to help people. Populations you can work with include: people recovering from PTSD, children with special needs, and people suffering from Alzheimers to name a few. This program is moving towards a 5-year, Masters degree program.
Music Performance: Music performance majors focus solely on perfecting their craft. They will typically search for summer programs (YAP Programs) and will usually go on to pursue a Masters Degree in Performance with the hopes of performing and teaching college one day. This is typically a classically based track, however, more and more programs are looking for crossover artists who can perform it all!
Musical Theatre: Love Broadway musicals? Have a knack for dancing and belting out those high notes? Then this is the program for you. Typically very very selective, these programs help prepare you for a career singing and dancing on stage in Regional, National, and International tours!
Bachelors of Arts in Music: This program is perfect for those who just aren’t sure what they want to major in, or who want to pursue music and gain more of a liberal arts education. This degree pairs perfectly with a double major in Business and can lead to careers working in Arts Administration and Record labels.
Picking your major be very stressful. Be honest with yourself and your support system about what your goals and dreams are, then pick the major that makes most sense to you!
