So You Want To Go To Music School - Pre-Screening Auditions

So you’ve decided to go to music school and you’ve picked your major. Now what? Most music schools today require a Pre-Screen audition. These are USUALLY due in the middle of October. PLAN ACCORDINGLY! Consider them to be a pre-audition. The audition panel will listen to your videos and then decide if they would like to extend you an invitation to audition live!

Pre-screens are a great way to show off the true and authentic you. Because these are recorded, you can record several takes of each song and submit the best ones!

How do we prepare for Pre-Screens?

First, you need to make sure all of you audition music is prepared and memorized. Next, you’ll want to schedule some rehearsal time with your accompanist before you record your video! Finally, find a space to record and enjoy yourself. Be sure to dress as if you are attending a live audition. Make sure you are fully in the screen and that the audio is clear!

After you have recorded, you can use a program like iMovie to edit your videos (not editing the sound, just cutting out un-needed footage). Make sure you read the requirements of the program clearly!

Once your pre-screen is submitted, keep practicing and wait to hear if you’ve been invited to sing for them in person! Keep working with your private teacher on all of your repertoire! You’ve got this!
