So You Want To Go To Music School - Auditions: What Do I Wear?

This past week, one of my high school seniors and I were talking about recording her prescreens and I asked her what she was planning on wearing. As expected, she said, “Oh a black dress and heels, probably.”

As musicians, our typical color of choice is black. I have a closet full of black dresses, shirts, skirts, etc. It’s part of the gig! But would you believe me if I told you not to wear black for auditions unless it fit your character?

As a vocalist, chances are, you’ll be singing in front of a black piano. If you’re wearing black, the audience or audition panel is going to lose you in the black of the piano. It’s hard to stand out when you’re wearing camouflage!

We want you to STAND OUT during your audition. Use this time to find colors and shapes that flatter you. Here are some guidelines on what to wear:

  • If you’re wearing a dress, make sure that it comes down to your knee, or wear black tights underneath.

  • Make sure the neckline isn’t too revealing.

  • Dress as if you’re applying for a job…because essentially you are!

  • If you’re going to wear a suit or pants and a button-down, make sure everything is pressed and wear a tie.

  • PRACTICE SINGING IN THE SHOES YOU ARE GOING TO WEAR!

At the end of the day, wear something that shows us who you are! And don’t forget to have fun!
